The Gairy Movement:
A History of Grenada, 1947-1997

Description

The Gairy Movement

In 1979, a violent revolution in Grenada transformed the politics and life in the Caribbean. Subsequently, Prime Minister Sir Eric Gairy was forced into exile in the United States and was able to return only after the revolutionary Prime Minister and others were executed by a firing squad in 1983.

“Uncle Gairy” was the leader of his labor union and political party from 1949 until 1997. He was the first Prime Minister when Grenada gained independence from Britain in 1974. As the leader in the struggle for freedom, he was officially bestowed with the title of “Father of Grenada’s Independence” in 1996.

Included are historical details and intricacies about British Colonialism, the West Indies Federation, regionalism, independence from Britain, and the Grenada Revolution of 1979
